Q

365daysofcapture asked:

How did you get your first job as a food photographer?

A

It actually happened accedentally. I was helping a start-up magazine get off the ground. They had a 1 page food review that I was sent on location to photograph. I accidentally put a few lights in the right spot and got some beautiful images of some great food on a bamboo counter. I would still use them in my portfolio if they were not so old!

My neighbors @wildpurveyors have received over 100 pounds of Morel Mushrooms, a spring time delicacy that will make their way to restaurants all over the east coast. Check out their new website @ http://www.wildpurveyorsmarket.com. Morel Mushrooms Photographed by Adam Milliron. (http://www.adammilliron.com)

I think one of the hardest parts of my job is waiting… waiting for images to come out (in magazines, to press, in campaigns, wherever their destination may be). Once they hit the presses, photographers have the right to use and abuse them on social media, portfolios and on fun blogs like this one.  Unfortunately we have been in production for the last month working on several large projects all due to be released in the next few weeks. AKA LOTS of new images coming to our tumblr soon, sorry for the delay in posts!
As we turn over 48,000!!!! Tumblr followers, it is really exciting to know so many people care to see what we do, and how we do it. At the same time, it does make you anxious to get images out!
Above are some behind the scenes images from a few recent shoots you will be seeing in the summer issue of Table Magazine (http://www.tablemagazine.com). My dog, Jeek waits for creative director Adriana Jacoud in the studio window as she comes in for a few shoots. Studio food stylist and blogger, Quelcy Kogel (http://withthegrains.com) is on set styling and I am checking final images before we strike the set.
Happy spring everybody!

Q

ponyfare asked:

Might be random, but is there any food or cocktail you find yourself slightly excited to shoot?

A

I honestly enjoy shooting almost all food and drinks with the exception of a few items that are just not pretty (ex: soup doesn’t do much for me). Although a lot of my work is on the commercial side, I do love editorial pieces for the beautiful natural light and atmosphere I can create. I will admit that shooting drinks, for some reason… rocks my socks!

A few months ago I was working on a project with Bon Appetit Magazine and decided to send in a few of my own ideas as well. I made a quick mock shoot-list with go-by’s,  concepts, shoot locations and in 1 day we shot 7 image options. This one was shot next to my studio at Wild Purveyors.  This cheese is all made locally or within the state of Pennsylvania in small batches by craft cheese makers. When I moved into my block 2 years ago we had almost nothing outside of an amazing thai restaurant. We now have 2 restaurants, a wine mixer, juice bar and yoga studio, cigar shop, another art gallery and a vet!  This image I knew in my head would be beautiful, but the final image was a nice surprise! http://www.adammilliron.com

Lemon/Thyme shoot!
Yet another calibration with Quelcy Kogel, of With the Grains (http://withthegrains.com)
We did this shoot on a huge old slate chalk board with almost all natural light. Our sets sometimes end up looking like space ships with C stands holding bounce cards, and hanging scrim papers.
Check out Quecly’s blog for the recipe and more behind the scnes from this Lemon Thyme shoot: http://withthegrains.com/2011/12/29/just-in-thyme-for-the-holidays-part-deux/

Q

fearofgravity asked:

I apologize if you get this question a lot, but do you often get to taste the foods/drinks that you shoot?

A

Sometimes, depending on the shoot. These days, images tend to have a more natural look. Though almost always styled in some form, the days of hair spray are quickly slipping away. Usually a food stylist will make several of items on set that we can eat if we are hungry (though usually lacking the flavor you would thing it had). The final product on set is tossed into the trash after it has been poked, fluffed, sprayed, heated or cooled.
